Your living funds, released monthly
A German blocked account (Sperrkonto) proves you can cover your living costs. The money is held in your name and becomes available in agreed monthly amounts after arrival and activation.
- Before your visa: deposit your funds
- The amount depends on your visa and length of stay. In 2026, university students generally need €992/month (€11,904 for 12 months); Opportunity Card applicants generally need €1,091/month. Scholarships or income count only if accepted by the relevant authority.
- After funding: get your confirmation
- Transfer the required funds and fees using the bank’s instructions. Once processed, download your blocked account confirmation from the bank’s portal and any insurance documents from the relevant insurer’s portal.
- After arrival: access your monthly allowance
- Complete identity verification and activate your account to access your monthly allowance. A German IBAN and bank card are included; usage and transfer fees follow the bank’s terms.
Choose cover for your stay
Account fees are the same across plans. Your age, enrolment status and visa purpose determine which health insurance is suitable.

How the €120 cashback works
Garantietarif 120 offers €120 cashback per insurance year, rather than a premium discount. It generally has a 3-year minimum term. Certain inpatient preventive, rehabilitation and related transport services can trigger a deductible of up to €180 per insurance year; other statutory co-payments are separate. Check cancellation and early termination terms before joining.
Rates for language students and students aged 30+
Care College Comfort starts at €34/month and Premium at €48/month for ages 29 and under during the first 24 months. Rates rise from age 30 or month 25. Care Student, Care Economy and trainee DAK premiums are quoted individually and are separate from the €4.90 account fee.
2026 DAK examples including long-term care insurance: €145.52/month for childless students under 23, or €150.65/month from age 23. Rates vary with family circumstances and the rates in force when joining. Care Protector XL costs an additional €7.50/month; accident benefits do not replace health insurance.
Work out your starting budget
Your blocked living funds remain your money. The estimate below includes account fees and the buffer, but excludes insurance, currency conversion and extra banking services.
| One-time fee Account opening €50 + funding confirmation €5 + account administration €10 | €65.00 |
|---|---|
| Monthly account fee Paid in advance; €58.80 for 12 months | €4.90/month |
| One-time buffer Held separately from living funds and fees; settled against actual charges when the account closes | €100.00 |
| Blocked living funds Amount required for your visa | Deposited separately |
Example: 12 months of university studies
€11,904 living funds + €65 one-time fee + €58.80 account fees + €100 buffer = €12,127.80.
Account charges total €123.80. Living funds and the buffer are not account fees. Insurance costs extra.
Extra fees may apply to minors, changes to blocking conditions, account closure, posted documents and international transfers. Follow your bank’s opening notice for payment amounts and instructions.

After the transfer is processed and approved, download the blocked account confirmation and any insurance certificates. Check your name and dates.
Arrive and activate
Prepare your passport, visa, German address registration and tax ID notice as requested. Follow the bank’s instructions for video verification in German or English, or branch activation.
Access your monthly funds
Once activated, use your monthly allowance under the blocking agreement. Your bank card and, where applicable, health insurance card will be sent separately.
Verification methods and documents depend on the bank’s current requirements. Allow time for transfers, checks, additional documents and visa processing.
What to prepare
- Valid passport and accurate personal details
- Email address and contact address
- Purpose of stay, planned arrival date and required duration
- Admission, course, training or job-seeking documents, as requested
- Existing health insurance details; private cover may require a health declaration
Check your confirmations
The bank and insurer issue separate documents. Check your name, total blocked funds, monthly allowance, insurance dates and plan against your visa and enrolment requirements.
For university enrolment, ask an authorised public health insurer to send the electronic M10 notification. A PDF policy does not replace it.
Frequently asked questions
Information dated 15 October 2026. Your visa requirements, bank contract and insurance terms apply.
What is a BASTI blocked account?
BASTI combines a blocked account from VietinBank Germany with optional insurance arranged by Care Concept. Basic is account-only; Smart and Premium add insurance suited to your applicant type.
How much do I need to deposit in 2026?
University students generally need €992/month, or €11,904 for 12 months, plus fees and the buffer. Opportunity Card applicants and independent language students generally need €1,091/month. Other categories and any scholarship or income offsets depend on your visa requirements.
Does €4.90/month include insurance?
No. It is the prepaid monthly account fee. A €65 one-time fee, €100 buffer and living funds are separate. Insurance premiums are extra, although eligible bundles such as Smart and Premium for university students under 30 include free incoming travel insurance. Basic does not.
When can I access my living funds?
After arrival in Germany, identity verification and account activation, you can access the agreed monthly allowance. Funding the account or obtaining a visa does not allow an immediate withdrawal of the full balance.
Can I get my money back if my visa is refused?
Submit the official refusal and follow the bank’s unblocking, closure and refund procedure. The €65 one-time fee is non-refundable. Return transfer, closure and other service charges may apply under the bank’s terms.
What if I cancel my plans or leave Germany early?
The bank may require an unblocking authorisation or other evidence, depending on your circumstances. Confirm the required documents before closing the account. Insurance cancellation and premium refunds are handled separately.
What are the conditions for Smart’s €120 cashback?
The student Smart plan includes DAK Garantietarif 120, an optional tariff generally binding for 3 years. The cashback is not a €10 monthly discount. Certain inpatient preventive, rehabilitation and related transport services can trigger a deductible of up to €180 per insurance year, with other co-payments separate. Check cashback, pro-rata and cancellation terms before joining.
How do Smart and Premium differ for language students?
Smart uses Care College Comfort; Premium uses Care College Premium. Rates start at €34 and €48/month respectively for ages 29 and under during the first 24 months. Higher ages and later months affect rates. A refund of 2 months’ current premium may be available after at least 12 months, subject to continuous cover, no claims, timely payments and the policy terms. Do not deduct it in advance.
Which plan suits students aged 30 or over?
Care Student in the Smart bundle generally accepts eligible applicants aged 12–39 under the insurer’s age calculation rules. A health declaration and €300 calendar-year deductible apply. From age 40, or if you already have public insurance or a non-standard study arrangement, check suitable options first.
Can incoming travel cover replace student insurance and M10?
Incoming travel insurance covers an initial transition period. University enrolment requires health insurance appropriate to your status and an electronic M10 notification from a public health insurer. Private insurance holders also need the notification or confirmation required by their university.
