Au pairs and interns

Family visits and travel abroad
Choose the period according to your temporary stay abroad. Check your destination, arrival date and existing insurance when applying.
This product is intended for temporary stays abroad. Applications are normally required before departure or within one year of arrival. If you have transferred your permanent residence to the destination country, check whether you still qualify.
What do liability and accident insurance cover?
Loss or injury you cause to others
Personal liability insurance handles eligible legal liability for compensation, such as accidentally injuring someone or damaging their property. The insurer assesses claims, pays justified claims and defends unjustified claims.
Accidents affecting you
The personal accident insurance in M and XL provides disability, accidental death, rescue and other benefits under the terms. Everyday medical care, illness treatment and medical expenses still require separate health insurance.

For example, eligible damage to rented immovable property requires you to pay 10%, at least €250, under all three plans. XL key loss has a 10% contribution, at least €100. Disability benefits depend on the degree of disability and the policy calculation. The maximum sum insured is not a fixed payment for every accident.
The amounts shown are the sums insured or limits for each benefit. Some benefits also have annual aggregate limits. See the official terms for full cover, exclusions and claims conditions.
Four things to check before applying
Eligibility for a temporary stay abroad
Check your age, nationality, permanent residence and arrival date. Confirm eligibility before applying if you are settling long term, extending cover or approaching 75.
Scope of rental property and key cover
Cover for rented immovable property does not cover every rented or borrowed item. Key cover is only included in XL and is subject to key type, liability scope and deductible restrictions.
The policy does not renew automatically
Apply for an extension before expiry if you need continuing cover. The total period, including extensions, cannot exceed 60 months.
Report accidents promptly
Keep photos, an account of what happened and the other party’s claim documents. Let the insurer assess liability before settling compensation. Avoid promising payments beyond your actual liability.

What else would you like to know?
Short-term costs, the difference from health insurance, lost keys and ending cover.
Contact our teamShould I consider this if I already have health insurance?
Health insurance mainly covers your own medical expenses. Care Protector liability insurance handles eligible compensation claims by others, while M and XL also include personal accident benefits. Check your existing contracts first to see whether you already have equivalent cover.
If I only buy one month, does S cost €2?
S is priced at €2/month but has a €10 minimum premium. The minimum is €12 for M and €15 for XL. A short-term policy therefore does not necessarily cost just one month’s stated rate.
Can I pay monthly?
The official application states that monthly payment is available for a policy of at least 6 months when monthly SEPA direct debit is selected. Other methods may require payment for the full period upfront. Available options and the total cost are shown in the application.
Which plan covers lost rental keys?
XL includes eligible liability for losing another person’s keys, up to €1,000 per event, with a contribution of 10%, at least €100. Payment depends on the key type, legal liability and necessary costs such as lock replacement. Not every lost key or locksmith bill is covered.
Can young children be insured?
The official application sets special restrictions for children under 7: S is not available, and M or XL provides only the personal accident portion. Check the child’s age and the liability cover actually needed before applying.
How do I end cover if I return home early?
If you end your stay abroad early, you can request early termination in writing and provide the required evidence. The official FAQs state that eligible overpaid premiums can be refunded for complete months, less a €5 administration fee. The insurer’s processing determines the end date and refund.
Is the cover only valid in Germany?
The insurer describes this as international liability and accident cover during temporary stays abroad. “Abroad” and “home country” are defined in the terms. Contracts of at least one year may also include an eligible six-week period in the home country. Check your trip against your permanent residence, nationality and contract.
