‘Abroad’ is defined in the policy; your place of residence and other excluded locations are not covered.

Who is Care Holiday for?
Care Holiday is annual travel health insurance for residents of Germany or Austria. Eligibility depends on residence, destination and trip length, rather than nationality alone.
Students, workers and other residents of Germany or Austria
For people already living locally who plan short trips to other countries. Individual cover is available at age-based rates to supplement health insurance while travelling.
Couples and families with children
Family cover can include up to 7 people: adults must be under 65 and children under 21. Insured children who meet the family eligibility conditions can also be covered when travelling alone, subject to the policy terms.
Frequent travellers and older travellers
Take multiple trips during the year for leisure or short business visits. Individual cover has no general maximum entry age; separate annual rates apply to ages 65–74 and 75 or over.
- Residence requirement
- You must have a residence in Germany or Austria. Confirm your residence and registration details before applying.
- Each trip
- The first 56 days of each trip abroad are covered, with no annual limit on the number of trips.
- Contract term
- One year, renewing for another year unless cancelled on time.
Annual premiums for individuals and families
These are annual premiums, rather than charges per trip or travel day. The applicable plan depends on age and family composition.
Care Holiday annual premiums
| Plan | Annual premium |
|---|---|
| Individual · ages 0–64 | €23.90 |
| Individual · ages 65–74 | €99.00 |
| Individual · ages 75 and over | €125.00 |
| Family · up to 7 people | €42.90 |
Family cover includes up to 2 adults aged 0–64 and 5 children aged 0–20. Moving into a new age band changes the premium at the relevant renewal payment. The insurance confirmation and policy are authoritative.
Multiple trips a year, with a 56-day limit for each trip
Several short trips to different countries during the same insurance year can each be covered under the policy terms. For a continuous trip lasting more than 56 days, cover generally applies only to the first 56 days. Paying again or starting a new insurance year does not automatically restart cover for the same continuous trip.
Medical treatment, hospital stays and repatriation abroad
Cover applies to medically necessary treatment for illness or following an accident, subject to the policy terms. There is no general deductible, but specific limits and exclusions still apply.
- Outpatient and inpatient treatment
- Eligible doctor consultations, hospital treatment, and prescribed medicines and dressings.
- Acute dental pain and denture repairs
- Pain relief, simple fillings and repairs to existing dentures. Implants, cosmetic treatment, routine preventive dentistry and other procedures are subject to exclusions.
- Medically reasonable repatriation
- Assessed and arranged by the insurer together with local doctors. When eligible, transport is to a suitable hospital near your residence. Do not arrange costly repatriation yourself and assume it will be reimbursed.
- Accident search and rescue
- Eligible accident-related search, assistance and rescue costs up to €15,000.
- An accompanying person for a hospitalised child
- If an insured child under 18 is admitted to hospital, accommodation for one accompanying person in the hospital may be covered under the policy terms.
- Visits by relatives during a hospital stay
- For a qualifying hospital stay of at least 9 days and an eligible relative, travel and accommodation benefits of up to €1,200 may be available. Admission and discharge days do not count towards these 9 days.
Unforeseeable treatment for pre-existing conditions may be covered. Trips taken for treatment, or treatment already known to be necessary during the trip before departure, are generally excluded. Pregnancy complications and premature birth are subject to specific terms; routine antenatal care and planned delivery are not automatically covered.
Check before departure and keep track of renewal
Arrange cover before you leave
Check that the contract has been concluded, cover has started and the premium has been paid. A contract concluded after departure applies only to subsequent trips, without retrospective cover for the current trip.
‘Abroad’ has a specific policy definition
Germany, the insured person's place of residence, and stays in Austria by Austrian citizens are excluded from the policy definition of abroad. Regular cross-border commuting is also subject to exclusions.
A one-year contract with automatic renewal
To stop renewal, submit cancellation as required at least one month before the end of the insurance year. Annual premiums are collected by SEPA direct debit. Returning from a short trip does not automatically end the contract.
Check planned treatment and high-risk activities
Routine check-ups, vaccinations, certain dental procedures and psychotherapy are excluded from standard cover. Professional sport and high-risk activities listed in the policy appendix are also subject to exclusions.

What should you do if you need medical treatment abroad?
Get medical help in an emergency
Use local emergency services. For hospital admission or repatriation, contact the 24-hour medical assistance service listed in your policy as soon as possible to coordinate treatment and costs.
Keep medical and travel records
Keep invoices, prescriptions, proof of payment and travel dates. Outpatient and dental treatment usually need to be paid for first, followed by a reimbursement claim.
Submit your claim through the policy's claims channel
Submit documents through the insurer's designated channel and respond to requests for additional information. For help in English, contact STU with your policy number and specific questions.
Application and document support does not replace the 24-hour emergency medical assistance service listed in your policy.
Questions before you choose
Residence, the per-trip cover period, family age limits and renewal are four key points to check.
Can I apply if I live in Germany but do not have a German passport?
Eligibility is based on residence in Germany or Austria and other policy conditions; a German passport is not required. Provide your residence and registration details when applying and confirm that your destination falls within the policy definition of abroad.
Can I use Care Holiday to visit my home country?
Check whether your home country is still your place of residence. The policy excludes the country of residence, so departing from Germany alone does not establish eligibility for cover. Explain your residence situation and travel plans before applying.
Is cover limited to 56 travel days in total per year?
The limit is the first 56 days of each trip abroad, rather than 56 days in total per year. There is no limit on the number of trips during the insurance year, but each trip must meet the policy conditions.
Can I apply from age 65 or 75?
Individual cover costs €23.90/year for ages 0–64, €99/year for ages 65–74 and €125/year from age 75. Adults on a family plan must be under 65; older relatives cannot be added at the family rate.
Are children on a family plan covered when travelling alone?
Insured children named in the policy who meet the family eligibility conditions can also be covered when travelling alone. Children must be under 21. Check the policy and renewal notice for plan changes as children reach the relevant age limits.
Are pre-existing conditions completely excluded?
Unforeseeable treatment may be covered. Travel for treatment, or treatment known before departure to be necessary during the trip, is generally excluded. Describe the specific condition and planned treatment rather than assuming that all pre-existing conditions are covered.
Can I buy cover after my trip has already started?
A contract concluded after departure covers only subsequent trips and does not retrospectively cover the trip already in progress. If you are already abroad, explain your situation before checking alternative arrangements.
Does this policy cover ticket refunds or lost baggage?
Care Holiday is travel health insurance. Trip cancellation, flight ticket refunds and lost baggage are outside the medical cover described on this page. Check separate insurance for these risks.
Do I need to cancel after my trip ends?
The contract runs for one year and renews automatically under the policy terms. To prevent renewal, submit cancellation at least one month before the end of the insurance year. Simply stopping payments is not sufficient.
