How long do you plan to stay in Austria?

Both durations are available with an Education discount or Standard rates.

A stay of no more than 364 days

Care Austria 364

€51/ month from · Education

  • At least 1 month and up to 364 days in total, including extensions.
  • For study, exchanges or visits with a confirmed end date.
  • Standard from €95/month.

More than a year, or no fixed return date

Care Austria · Open-ended

€56/ month from · Education

  • At least 1 month, with no predetermined maximum policy duration.
  • For longer-term study or stays with an uncertain end date.
  • Standard from €155/month.
If you may stay for more than a year, consider the open-ended plan from the outset.

Moving from the 364-day plan to long-term cover requires the insurer’s agreement and may involve a new health assessment. Open-ended contracts also require continuing eligibility and must be terminated under the contract rules.

Monthly premiums by status and age

Choose Education if you meet the educational discount conditions. Standard rates apply to other eligible applicants.

Standard · Ages 0–49 €95 €155
Standard · Ages 50–64 €95 €222

On a phone, scroll sideways. Ages 12–35 include age 35. Age and Education eligibility are assessed at the start of cover or when applying for continuing cover. The formal application outcome and contract determine the final premium.

The open-ended Education plan provides a premium guarantee for up to 6 years, provided you continue to meet and can demonstrate the educational eligibility conditions.

Who can apply?

For non-Austrian nationals travelling to Austria whose permanent residence before departure is outside Austria. The maximum age for an initial application is 74.

University students and doctoral researchers

Study, exchanges, preparatory courses, doctoral research and academic visits. Applicants aged 12–35 who meet the educational purpose requirements may apply for Education rates.

Language students and trainees

Language courses, eligible training, internships, au pair stays and Working Holiday activities. Check whether your specific activity qualifies for the discount when applying.

Family visits, reunification and business visits

Eligible applicants who do not qualify for Education can apply for Standard rates according to age. Choose the 364-day or open-ended plan according to your expected stay.

Already living in Austria for some time? Check continuity of cover first.

You should normally apply before arrival or within one year of arrival. After one year, conditions such as continuous previous insurance must be checked. Minors need an adult policyholder.

From outpatient care to hospital and dental treatment

The Education discount does not reduce the scope of medical benefits. Travel cover outside Austria differs between the two policy durations.

Main benefits and conditions
Benefit Cover summary
Outpatient and specialist treatment Medically necessary outpatient treatment with legally licensed local doctors of your choice, including eligible private doctors.
Hospital treatment and prescribed medicines Standard-class treatment in shared rooms in public and private hospitals, plus eligible prescribed medicines and dressings.

Preventive examinations Eligible early detection examinations, up to €500 per policy year.
Psychotherapy Eligible psychotherapy, up to €1,500 per policy year.
Pregnancy and childbirth Pregnancy examinations, treatment and childbirth are covered under the terms. Conditions concern when pregnancy began and applicable waiting periods. Childbirth normally has an 8-month waiting period.
Medical repatriation Medically reasonable repatriation to your home country, arranged by a doctor and meeting the policy conditions.

Benefits are subject to medical necessity, reasonable fees, limits and contract conditions. Specific arrangements in Austria also refer to ÖGK benefits. Declare pre-existing conditions, pregnancy or planned treatment before applying and confirm cover.

Travel outside Austria is covered, subject to destinations and duration

The 364-day plan covers travel to other EU and Schengen countries for up to 30 days in total. The open-ended plan also provides cover in the EU. Visits to your home country and stays in Schengen countries outside the EU have separate day limits. Contact the insurer in writing before travelling to confirm your cover.

Four things to check before applying

Provide accurate health information

The formal application includes a health questionnaire. Answer the questions about previous illnesses, medication and treatment accurately. Acceptance is subject to the insurer’s assessment.

Match the policy duration to your plans

If you expect to stay longer than 364 days or have no fixed return date, consider the open-ended plan first. The 364-day plan cannot be assumed to renew indefinitely.

Some treatment requires advance confirmation

Planned examinations, surgery or dentures may require prior approval of costs. Notify the insurer promptly about hospital treatment.

Notify the insurer when you leave or your status changes

If you permanently leave Austria, finish your studies or change residence status, promptly request confirmation of the contract end date or any tariff change. Cancellation must follow the contract rules.

Apply in four steps, with support in English

Prepare your date of birth, arrival date, study or visit plans and health information.

  1. Enter your stay details

Provide your arrival date in Austria, previous country of residence and purpose of stay.

  2. Choose a plan

Check your plan and premium against your age, status and intended stay.

  3. Complete the application

Fill in the health questionnaire, personal details and payment information, review everything and submit.

  4. Receive your insurance documents

Once accepted, check your name, cover dates and policy details. Save the documents needed for your application.

Policy issue times depend on the assessment outcome. If the application form does not open correctly, use your usual mobile or desktop web browser.

Who qualifies for the €51 and €56 monthly rates?

Both rates are for eligible Education applicants aged 12–35. €51 applies to the plan lasting up to 364 days; €56 applies to the open-ended plan. Other applicants pay the relevant Standard age-based rate.

Can I use it for an Austrian residence application?

Care Concept states that Care Austria and Care Austria 364 are recognised by Austrian administrative authorities, including Vienna’s MA35. Submit the relevant insurance documents as requested by the authority. Recognition of the insurance does not guarantee residence approval.

Does the lower Education premium mean fewer benefits?

The insurer states that the educational discount does not change the scope of medical benefits. You still need to distinguish the contract duration and the rules for cover outside Austria.

Can I cancel the open-ended plan freely each month?

Ordinary cancellation normally requires one month’s notice to the end of the policy year. Circumstances such as permanently leaving Austria may qualify for early termination, subject to evidence and the insurer’s confirmation. A minimum duration of 1 month does not mean you can cancel freely every month afterwards.

Am I covered during visits to China?

Eligible temporary visits home have limited cover, normally 14 or 28 days, depending on the policy duration and relevant policy-year rules. Notify the insurer in writing before departure and confirm the number of days available to you.

Do I need to pay medical costs upfront?

Direct billing with doctors or hospitals can be arranged in Austria under the applicable rules, but a provider may still ask you to pay. Show your insurance documents and keep invoices. Contact the insurer promptly before hospital stays or planned treatment.
