Care Expatriate Long-term international health insurance
Prepare for life abroad.

For eligible expatriates, freelancers and people living abroad temporarily. Choose from three plans and two cover areas according to your age, stay and budget.

  • Monthly premiums from €58
  • Maximum contract term 5years
  • Maximum entry age 74years

€58/month applies to ages 13–40 on Basic with a €150 annual deductible, excluding the USA, Canada and Mexico. The formal application confirms the premium and acceptance conditions.

From essential medical care to higher benefit limits

All three plans include eligible outpatient treatment, hospital care and prescribed medicines. Main differences include dental care, preventive check-ups, treatment limits and deductible options.

Basic

€58/ month from
  • General annual deductible: €150
  • Dental treatment: up to €600 per policy year
  • Routine preventive check-ups and non-accident-related dentures are not included

For those prioritising essential medical cover and monthly cost.

Comfort

€63/ month from
  • General annual deductible: €150 or €500
  • Adds preventive check-ups and visual aids
  • Eligible denture costs reimbursed at 60%, subject to annual limits

Balance your benefits, deductible and monthly premium.

Premium

€109/ month from
  • General annual deductible: €0, €500 or €1,000
  • Higher limits for many treatments and preventive check-ups
  • Eligible denture costs reimbursed at 80%, subject to annual limits

For those seeking higher benefit limits or a zero general deductible.

All starting prices apply to ages 13–40, excluding the USA, Canada and Mexico. The Comfort starting price uses a €500 annual deductible; Premium uses a €1,000 annual deductible. A zero general deductible does not mean every expense is covered or remove special conditions for pre-existing medical conditions.

Monthly premiums by age and cover area

Amounts are base health insurance premiums per person per month. Deductibles in the tables apply per policy year; they are not additional monthly payments.

On a phone, scroll sideways. Premiums exclude optional insurance and possible risk surcharges. Follow-on contracts may be recalculated using your age and the rates then applicable. The insurer confirms the final premium.

A higher deductible usually means a lower monthly premium

For example, for a 30-year-old on Comfort excluding the USA, Canada and Mexico, a €150 annual deductible costs €84/month; a €500 deductible costs €63/month. The latter saves €252 in annual premiums but increases the general deductible by €350. Consider both premiums and potential out-of-pocket medical costs.

The deductible applies to eligible reimbursable expenses under the terms. Excluded services do not become covered simply because you have paid the deductible. The annual deductible is not reduced proportionately for a contract lasting less than a year.

How do the three plans differ?

This is a summary of key benefits. Reimbursement remains subject to deductibles, waiting periods, medical necessity, fee standards and special agreements. “Included” does not mean unlimited or unconditional cover.

Submit a treatment and cost plan before treatment as required. Failing to do so may reduce benefits. Dentures normally have an 8-month special waiting period. Separate rules apply to accident-related dental restoration.

Check pregnancy cover separately

Pregnancy already existing before application, pregnancy beginning during cover and childbirth have different rules. Childbirth has an 8-month special waiting period. If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, confirm the specific acceptance conditions first.

International cover depends on your destination and home-country restrictions

The product offers cover areas including or excluding the USA, Canada and Mexico. Eligibility also depends on nationality, residence before departure and your actual stay arrangements.

Mainly staying in Germany or other territories

Start with rates excluding the USA, Canada and Mexico. You must still meet the temporary-stay and other eligibility conditions. Destination alone does not determine eligibility.

Planning to stay in the USA, Canada or Mexico

Check the cover area including those countries. Base premiums for other territories cannot simply be used for long-term residence in the USA, Canada or Mexico.

Short visits to your home country

For contracts of at least one year, eligible temporary home visits are covered for up to 30 days on Basic, 45 days on Comfort or 90 days on Premium per policy year. Notify the insurer of the start and end dates before each trip.

Your home country is not determined by passport nationality alone

The policy definition of home country also concerns permanent residence. General cover abroad differs from temporary home-country cover. Check your nationality and residence situation. Failure to give advance notice of a home visit may reduce benefits.

Plans excluding the USA, Canada and Mexico have a limited extension for eligible temporary visits: up to 42 days per policy year for contracts of at least one year. Shorter contracts have separate limits, and advance notification is required. Ask the insurer to confirm that the extension applies to your contract before using it.

Check these conditions before applying

Your work, residence status, existing insurance and health can affect acceptance and the final scope of cover.

Compulsory insurance obligations in Germany

This product cannot simply replace legally required health or long-term care insurance. Check eligibility first if you have a German employment contract, are changing status or already hold long-term residence rights.

How the period of cover in Germany is counted

Cover for stays in Germany is limited to 5 years in total, including follow-on contracts. Previous similar insurance may also count. Changing insurers does not automatically give you another 5 years.

Whether waiting periods apply

The general waiting period is 31 days. Application before departure, application within the specified time after arrival or qualifying continuous previous insurance may allow a waiver or credit. Dentures, childbirth and hospital cash benefits have separate special waiting periods.

Complete the health questionnaire accurately

Pre-existing conditions may involve risk surcharges, special out-of-pocket arrangements or exclusions. Do not assume the general annual deductible shown in the tables represents your entire share of treatment costs for pre-existing conditions.

Only staying for 3–6 months? Confirm acceptance first.

The website and product summary state a minimum policy duration of 3 months. The plan-specific terms currently linked from the insurer’s website also refer to an expected stay abroad of more than 6 months as an application condition. These statements are not interchangeable. For a shorter stay, obtain explicit confirmation from the insurer before paying.

Obtaining permanent residence in Germany, ending a temporary stay abroad or changing employment can affect cover. Notify the insurer promptly. Some manual occupations, professional sports and other specific situations also have eligibility restrictions.

Prepare your details before applying

Confirm eligibility and benefits first, then check premiums, the health questionnaire and policy details.

  1. Explain your stay arrangements

Have your age, nationality, previous residence, destination, arrival date and expected stay duration ready.

  2. Choose a plan and deductible

Compare the three plans, confirm whether the USA, Canada and Mexico are included, then choose your annual deductible.

  3. Complete your health and personal details

Answer the official questionnaire accurately and provide requested evidence of previous insurance or other documents.

  4. Check the acceptance terms

Check the final premium, start date, waiting periods and special agreements. Pay according to the confirmed arrangements.

Submitting an application does not mean cover has been accepted. The insurer may request more documents or offer a quote with special conditions.

What else would you like to know?

Applying after arrival, pre-existing conditions, continuing cover and reimbursement after treatment.

Apply online with no application fee

Can I apply after arriving in Germany?

Possibly, but your arrival date, previous insurance and current status need checking. The official application FAQs allow some applications after departure and require evidence of continuous cover where applicable. Being able to submit an application does not mean immediate cover without a waiting period.

Are all pre-existing conditions excluded?

There is no universal answer. The product has special rules for pre-existing conditions, and the health assessment may result in individual acceptance terms. Unless otherwise agreed, the applicable terms may involve a special €5,000 out-of-pocket amount per person per policy year and separate benefit limits over the contract period.

Declare your circumstances accurately and check the written acceptance terms. Choosing Premium with a €0 general deductible does not automatically mean zero out-of-pocket costs for pre-existing conditions.

Can I use it for a German visa or residence application?

This depends on your application category, stay duration and individual insurance obligations. Before submission, compare your insurance confirmation, cover and any required explanations with the authority’s requirements. Buying this product does not automatically satisfy every visa or residence requirement.

Can I continue cover after five years?

Stays in Germany are subject to a cumulative 5-year limit. Stays outside Germany may qualify for a follow-on contract. Certain initial 5-year Comfort or Premium contracts provide a one-time continuation guarantee, subject to scope and conditions.

This is not automatic renewal or lifetime cover. Before your original contract expires, check eligibility, age and the premium for the new contract.

Can I start with Basic and upgrade later?

The terms normally do not allow free switching between the three plans during the contract. Separate provisions apply if a residence authority requires a change. Consider your future dental, preventive care and deductible needs when choosing.

Can I cancel early?

Under the general terms, ordinary cancellation is available with one month’s notice after the minimum contract term. Submit the request in text form and confirm the actual end date and refund arrangements. Stopping direct debit does not itself cancel the contract.

Can I use the insurance card for direct billing?

The digital insurance card is not equivalent to a German statutory electronic health card. Explain your cover to the provider, keep treatment invoices, prescriptions and supporting documents, and claim reimbursement under the insurer’s procedures.

For hospital stays, surgery, major investigations or medical repatriation, contact the insurer promptly to confirm notification and prior cost approval requirements.

Are liability insurance and income protection during illness included?

The prices on this page are health insurance premiums. Care Protector liability and accident insurance and Care Cash sickness benefit insurance are optional separate products. Availability, premiums and benefit conditions must be confirmed individually.
