Your monthly contributions, clearly explained

Students pay the applicable student rate; employees contribute according to their assessable income. Long-term care insurance is a separate part of the total.

Employees working in Germany

8.945% Employee share for health insurance

The general employee health insurance rate is 17.89%, shared equally between employee and employer. Contributions are based on assessable income, up to the contribution ceiling.

Long-term care insurance is additional. The rate depends on factors including age, children and the region where you work.

Age 30 or no longer eligible for student rates

Individual assessment Check your continuing insurance options

Student rates normally end at the close of the semester in which you turn 30. Any extension, voluntary public insurance or other membership arrangement depends on your individual circumstances.

Voluntary public insurance is generally income-based; the student contributions above cannot simply be carried over.

Studying, working or switching insurers?
Start with your membership status

The same application supports different membership situations. Your course, employment relationship and existing insurance determine the appropriate arrangement.

  • Bachelor’s, master’s and exchange students

You can apply if you are enrolled at a German university and meet the requirements for public student health insurance. Exchange students should also check their existing cover and exchange programme arrangements.

  • Employees and employed doctoral or postdoctoral researchers

Eligibility is assessed according to your employment and social insurance status. Have your starting date, employer and previous insurance details ready. Contributions are normally handled through payroll.

  • Already insured in Germany and switching to BARMER

Submit your switching details and confirm any binding period with your current insurer and the start date of your new cover. Members with optional tariffs should also check those contracts.

  • Language students, preparatory students, scholarship researchers and the self-employed

These situations do not automatically qualify for student rates. Contact us first so that your studies, income and insurance history can be assessed.

Member benefits beyond everyday medical care

Outpatient care, hospital treatment, prescriptions, basic dental treatment and preventive care are provided under public health insurance rules. Some services involve statutory co-payments, age limits or prior approval.

€100 / €200 Maximum per year

Health bonus: cash or support for health expenses

Collect BARMER Bonus points through recognised activities such as sport and preventive check-ups. Redeem them for up to €100 in cash or up to €200 towards eligible health expenses.

Both options use the same annual points allowance, so the two maximum amounts cannot be added together. Reimbursement of health expenses requires eligible receipts.

Before your 26th birthday

Cover for HPV vaccination

BARMER covers HPV vaccination for eligible male and female members within the age limit. Adult members generally pay first and submit their invoice through Meine Barmer.

Ask your doctor about the vaccination schedule. If you are approaching the age limit, confirm the reimbursement conditions for each dose in advance.

Dental health

Dental check-ups and professional cleaning are different

Routine dental check-ups and eligible tartar removal are statutory benefits. Professional dental cleaning (PZR) usually has to be paid for privately; bonus points may help cover the cost.

Professional dental cleaning and routine tartar removal are different services. This does not mean every member receives a free professional cleaning each year.

Incoming travel insurance offer

When applying for BARMER through STU, ask about our complimentary incoming travel insurance arrangement. Tell us your planned arrival date and the start of your studies or employment so that the cover can be coordinated.

Eligibility, duration and actual cover dates are subject to confirmation. Incoming travel insurance and BARMER public health insurance are separate types of cover, each subject to its own policy or membership confirmation.

From application to university enrolment or your first day at work

  1. Complete the online application

Choose your student or employment status and provide your personal details, intended starting date, university or employer, and existing insurance information.

  2. Provide documents and confirm your membership

Supply admission, enrolment or employment documents as requested. Your starting date and the relevant confirmation are issued after assessment.

  3. Complete university or employer formalities

Students request an M10 notification for their university. Employees give their membership details to their employer, who handles social insurance registration through the employment process.

Processing time depends on complete documents and the insurer’s assessment. Submitting an application does not mean your cover has started immediately or your university has received its notification.

Questions to check before you apply

Tell us about any employment, family members or existing insurance so that your membership arrangement can be confirmed accurately.

Do the student prices include long-term care insurance?
Yes. The totals in the student table include both health and long-term care insurance. The employee rate of 8.945% is only the employee’s health insurance share; long-term care insurance is additional.
Can my whole family join for free when I become a member?
Eligible spouses, registered civil partners and children can apply for free family insurance. Eligibility depends on income, residence, age and other insurance status. Family members are not automatically covered for free.
Are students only allowed to earn up to the Minijob limit?
Not as a general rule. Student insurance status depends on factors such as working hours and the type of employment; family insurance has separate income conditions. Tell BARMER about your situation before starting or changing a job.
Are the health bonus and cashback tariff the same?
No. Bonus points are earned through recognised activities. The Geld-zurück-Tarif is a separate optional tariff with a binding term and out-of-pocket conditions. Neither is a fixed reward paid automatically when you join.
Can I apply before I have a German address?
You can submit an application through STU and explain that you are currently abroad. Provide your address and any other required documents afterwards. Your starting date is subject to BARMER’s confirmation.
Do language, preparatory or doctoral students qualify for student rates?
Not necessarily. Eligibility depends on the course and your insurance status; an admission letter or student card alone is not enough. Employed doctoral researchers are normally assessed according to their employment.
Should I cancel my current insurance before switching to BARMER?
First submit your switching details and confirm your existing contract’s term and the new starting date, then follow the appropriate procedure. Switching between public insurers differs from moving from private to public insurance.
